The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is located approximately 5 miles from the District of Columbia in
Bethesda, Maryland. The NLM (Building 38) and the Lister Hill Center (Building 38A) are at the southeast corner
of the Campus of the National Institutes of Health. The NIH, like all Federal
Government facilities, has instituted safety and security measures. Visitors must enter the Campus through the
central location for registering and orienting visitors (the Visitor Gateway Center) and show one (1) form of
identification (a government-issued photo ID—driver's license, passport, green card, etc.); visitors
should continue to wear their identification badge prominently at all times while on Campus. The Visitor Gateway Center is located at the South Drive near the exit of the Metro system's Medical Center stop. A valid picture ID is required to enter the Library. |
| |
All visitors are encouraged to use Metro or other public transportation if at all possible. Parking for visitors is always in short supply at the NIH, especially during conferences, and parking regulations are strictly enforced with tickets and tow trucks. In addition, all visitor and commercial vehicles will be inspected. Visitors who drive should allow extra time for this vehicle inspection procedure. Persons with NIH parking tags can park in the employee parking areas (a four-level deck adjacent to the Lister Hill Building, the large parking lot [41-B] behind Lister Hill, and a small group of spaces north of Building 38 [the main NLM Building]). Visitors are encouraged to park in the attendant-assisted lot across Center Drive from the Library, to the right of the Natcher Building. Parking there costs $2/hour, with a maximum fee of $12/day. |

We encourage visitors to the NLM to use Metrorail or Metrobus service on weekdays. Take Metro's
Red Line to the Medical Center Station; visit the Metro website for information on
fares and schedules: http://www.wmata.com/tripplanner/maps.cfm. Upon exiting the escalator, proceed to the Visitor Gateway Center for visitor badging. The NLM is 2 blocks, approximately 200 yards, south of the Visitor’s Center. |

The workshop will take place on the NIH Campus in the Lister Hill Auditorium, Building 38A, on both December 1 and 2, 2008. A complimentary shuttle bus to and from the NIH Campus has been arranged for all out-of-town participants staying at the Hyatt Regency Bethesda Hotel. Hotel guests will gather in front of the Hyatt Regency Bethesda Hotel at 7:00 a.m. on both days of the workshop. An NIH security team will arrive at that time to conduct the security inspections of everyone’s luggage so that the bus will not have to go through a further security check on Campus. Please have your photo ID available. The bus will leave at 7:15 a.m. for the NIH Campus and the Lister Hill Auditorium. There also will be a shuttle bus to take the hotel guests back to the hotel following the workshop on the first day, but not on the second day, so please plan to have all your luggage with you on the second day of the workshop. On December 2, onsite meeting support will help coordinate transportation to local airports or train stations for out-of-town guests following the workshop, if needed. Information about obtaining
hotel accommodations can be found on the Hotel Info tab above. |

NOTE: Registration is FREE for all participants to attend this government-sponsored conference. |
